HPE merges Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new phase of hybrid computing
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is making a strategic move toward integrating classical supercomputers with quantum technologies. The company has expanded its partner network to include leading players in the quantum industry: Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The goal is to create full-fledged hybrid computing systems.
The key idea is to combine the power of the HPE Cray supercomputing platform with quantum processors, control systems, and error correction mechanisms. HPE intends not just to add a quantum block to existing infrastructure, but to create a unified architecture capable of efficiently distributing computational tasks between classical and quantum components.
What is planned to be created?
Under the initiative, partners will deploy specialized testbeds. These will serve as proving grounds for:
- Joint development and optimization of quantum algorithms;
- Verification of software compatibility at the intersection of the two paradigms;
- Assessment of real-world performance of hybrid systems in solving practical problems.
Special attention is given to quantum error correction — one of the most challenging barriers to practical quantum computing. The involvement of Riverlane, which specializes in this area, underscores the seriousness of HPE's intentions.
Expert opinion: This step by HPE is not just a technological experiment. It is a signal to the market that the era of "pure" quantum without classical support is coming to an end. Hybrid systems, where a supercomputer manages a quantum coprocessor, are the only realistic path to commercially significant results in the next 5–7 years.
