HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage in hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has taken a decisive step toward creating hybrid computing architectures by expanding its alliance with leading players in the quantum industry. The new ecosystem includes Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane—each of these partners brings unique expertise in quantum processors, control systems, and error correction.

Integration of Classical and Quantum Capabilities

The key goal of the collaboration is to integrate the HPE Cray supercomputing platform with quantum processors. This is not just a mechanical connection of two types of computers, but a deep architectural effort, including the creation of specialized testbeds. On these testbeds, the partners will jointly develop hybrid algorithms, verify software compatibility, and assess real-world system performance under conditions close to industrial ones.

Why This Matters for the Industry

Hybrid computing is the only realistic path to the practical use of quantum computers in the coming years. Quantum processors, even with a limited number of qubits, can solve narrow but complex problems (e.g., portfolio optimization or molecule modeling), while classical supercomputers handle the bulk of management, post-processing, and error correction. HPE Cray, being one of the most powerful supercomputing platforms in the world, is ideally suited for the role of a "classical core" in such a setup.

Technical Details and Challenges

Special attention in the project is given to error correction—the Achilles' heel of modern quantum systems. The partnership with Riverlane, specializing in quantum error correction, and Quantum Machines with their advanced controllers, indicates that HPE intends to address the decoherence problem at the hardware level. Additionally, the involvement of Intel with their spin qubits and IQM with Finnish superconducting processors suggests a drive to cover the widest possible range of quantum technologies.

This is not just another technology alliance, but a systemic signal to the market. By bringing together such diverse players under its wing, HPE is essentially creating an open standard for hybrid computing.
