HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has officially announced a major expansion of its partner ecosystem aimed at integrating classical supercomputers with quantum computers. The new coalition includes key players in the quantum industry such as Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane.

The main goal of the initiative is to create full-fledged hybrid quantum-classical computing systems based on the HPE Cray platform. The company plans to combine high-performance clusters with quantum processors, qubit control systems, and modern error correction solutions. This will help overcome one of the main limitations of current quantum machines—their high vulnerability to noise and errors.

As part of the project, partners will create specialized testbeds. These will be used for joint development of hybrid algorithms, testing software compatibility, and evaluating the real-world performance of such systems. Special attention is given to scenarios where quantum accelerators complement classical computing rather than replace it.

Analytical commentary: This is a strategically sound decision. Quantum computers today cannot operate in isolation—their strength is revealed precisely in tandem with classical supercomputers. Combining Cray, a platform refined over decades for scientific computing, with quantum processors from leading startups could deliver a real breakthrough in materials science, cryptography, and optimization. However, the key challenge remains scaling error correction—without this, hybrid systems will remain only laboratory prototypes.
