HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is taking a decisive step into the era of hybrid computing by expanding its partner ecosystem to integrate classic Cray supercomputers with advanced quantum technologies. As part of a new initiative, HPE is joining forces with Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane — key players in quantum processors, control systems, and error correction.

The essence of the project is to create full-fledged testbeds where algorithms will be refined, software compatibility verified, and the real performance of hybrid quantum-classical systems assessed. HPE aims to integrate the high-performance HPE Cray platform directly with quantum processors, qubit control systems, and solutions for noise suppression and error correction.

This is not just another technology agreement. It represents a fundamental shift in computing architecture. Hybrid systems will allow computational loads to be distributed: classic supercomputers will handle tasks requiring high precision and stability, while quantum processors will tackle highly specialized problems beyond the reach of traditional binary computing. This is particularly relevant for cryptography, molecular structure modeling, and optimization of complex logistics chains.

It is important to note that HPE is not merely signing memorandums. The company already has practical experience: it previously delivered a quantum-classical system for the German Jülich Research Center. This new round of partnerships scales up that approach. The focus now is on compatibility of different quantum platforms (superconducting qubits, ion traps, neutral atoms) with a unified supercomputer infrastructure.
