BlackRock launches a hybrid Bitcoin ETF with an options strategy

ETF

The world's largest asset manager, BlackRock, has officially launched a new exchange-traded fund on the Nasdaq — the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (ticker: BITA). This is not just another spot Bitcoin ETF, but a complex hybrid instrument that combines direct exposure to the first cryptocurrency with an active options strategy.

BITA simultaneously tracks the dynamics of Bitcoin's spot price and generates premium income through the systematic sale of covered call options. In the product description, BlackRock positions it as "a tool for monthly income that reflects a significant portion of Bitcoin's growth with potentially lower volatility."

To implement this strategy, the fund directly holds Bitcoin, as well as shares of its own spot ETF — IBIT. Income is generated by actively selling call options, primarily on IBIT shares, and occasionally on Bitcoin ETP indices. The target for covered calls is approximately 25–35% of the portfolio's assets. BITA's management fees are set at 0.65%.

The benchmark used is the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. Custodial services are provided by Coinbase and BNY Mellon. As of June 15, the fund's net assets amounted to $10,649,844, with a NAV per share of $53.25. There are 200,000 shares outstanding. Yield data is not yet available.

BlackRock highlights four basic scenarios for BITA's performance relative to IBIT. If Bitcoin's price declines, options income may partially offset losses. In a sideways or moderate growth market, it can improve overall results. However, during a sharp and strong Bitcoin rally, the fund will limit profit potential, as selling covered calls "caps" income above the strike price. At the same time, BITA retains full exposure to declines below this level, and premiums may not cover drawdowns in high-volatility conditions.

From my perspective, the launch of BITA is a landmark step. BlackRock is effectively legitimizing options strategies in institutional crypto investing, offering conservative investors a way to generate returns even in a volatile market. However, it's worth remembering: such an instrument is not suited for aggressive growth — it is more for those who want to "clip coupons" and are willing to sacrifice some upside to reduce risk.
