The markets for space technology and artificial intelligence are increasingly intersecting, and the latest news is direct proof of this. SpaceX, the leading private aerospace company, has entered into an agreement to acquire the AI service Cursor. The deal is valued at an impressive $60 billion.

Deal Details

Financing will be carried out exclusively with SpaceX Class A shares. The exchange ratio will be calculated based on the volume-weighted average closing price over the seven trading days preceding the deal's completion. This is a standard mechanism that minimizes volatility and ensures transparency for both parties.

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, pending all necessary regulatory approvals. Interestingly, as early as April, SpaceX had already obtained the right to buy out Cursor for $60 billion or, alternatively, pay $10 billion under a previously signed collaboration agreement. The choice in favor of a full acquisition indicates the company's long-term strategic plans.

Analytical Perspective

The purchase of Cursor is not just an investment in AI. It is a signal that SpaceX intends to integrate advanced machine learning algorithms into its key processes: from optimizing flight trajectories to autonomous management of Starlink satellite constellations. Given that Cursor specializes in generative AI and code automation, the synergy with SpaceX's engineering tasks is obvious.

My opinion: The $60 billion sum may seem inflated for an AI startup, but considering that SpaceX is valued at over $200 billion, this acquisition is a reasonable move to strengthen technological superiority. In the coming years, we will see space and AI merge into a single ecosystem, and SpaceX clearly wants to be the leader in this race.
