The digital ruble in action: how the new form of national currency works

The digital ruble, the third form of the Russian national currency, is gradually entering real life. One of the first users, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market Anatoly Aksakov, shared details of the practical application of this instrument. For an ordinary buyer, the process of paying with the digital ruble is visually indistinguishable from the usual non-cash payment: the same bank card, the same mobile app. But behind the scenes lies a fundamentally different logic of money movement.

How the payment process works

To make a transaction, the user opens a special digital account directly in the Bank of Russia system. A personal mobile phone number is linked to this account. The transfer is initiated in the standard app of the commercial bank where the client is serviced. After pressing the "digital ruble" button, the system automatically redirects the user to the regulator's platform. There, they select the recipient and instantly send the funds. Technically, according to Aksakov, the procedure is no different from a usual payment at a restaurant. The legislator himself has already successfully paid with the new currency at an establishment that had previously opened a digital account. Commercial organizations operate under the same scheme: they receive funds, make transfers, and pay for services.

Key differences from non-cash money

The key difference lies in the vector of cash flow movement. In ordinary non-cash payments, rubles move within the infrastructure of commercial banks. The digital ruble, however, always remains within the perimeter of the Bank of Russia.

Thus, on the regulator's platform, amounts are simply transferred from one balance to another, bypassing the chain of intermediaries. This radically increases transaction speed. Salaries in the new rubles will be credited to an isolated special account, and the balance will be displayed in the familiar banking app, but separately from other funds.

Official launch and first transactions

The first company to send an official budget payment in the new currency was the enterprise "Smak-Agro." The transfer amount was 125 thousand rubles. The digital ruble is absolutely equivalent to cash and standard non-cash funds: one paper ruble equals one non-cash ruble or one digital ruble. Citizens and companies will store this money in special wallets on the Central Bank's platform.

The law on the introduction of the new payment form from September 1, 2026, was approved by President Vladimir Putin back in July 2025. From this date, all major retail outlets and banks are obliged to provide Russians with the opportunity to make purchases in digital format.

Analytical commentary: The digital ruble is not just an alternative to non-cash payments, but an evolution of the monetary system itself. The transition to a unified Central Bank platform reduces transaction costs and opens up opportunities for programmable payments. However, for mass adoption, seamless integration into the existing banking infrastructure is critically important. The first real transactions show that technical readiness exists, but the main test—scaling to the entire economy—is still ahead.
