$740 USDT and an article about terrorism: how a cryptocurrency transfer became a criminal case for an IT director from Russia

Law enforcement authorities have filed a final indictment against DiHouse IT director Yuri Belenky. At first glance, the case reads like a script from a legal thriller: a series of small stablecoin transfers led the top manager to face charges of financing terrorism. The total transaction amount was just over 740 USDT — a sum many traders spend daily on fees and gas.

Case Details: Amount, Timeline, and Prosecution's Position

The investigation accuses Belenky of aiding terrorist activities under Part 1.1 of Article 205.1 of the Russian Criminal Code. Case materials indicate that from January 2023 to March 2024, he made at least seven transfers from one of his crypto addresses. According to the prosecution, the recipient of the funds is journalist Arkady Babchenko, who, like Belenky himself, is listed in the register of terrorists and extremists and has also been designated a foreign agent.

The prosecution claims these transfers were intended to finance the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, Belenky's defense categorically denies his guilt and calls the case unique for the Moscow region. Lawyers emphasize that for the first time, the key link in a terrorism financing indictment is not cash or bank transfers, but exclusively virtual assets.

Timeline and Status of Proceedings

The criminal case was opened on October 10, 2025, against a 40-year-old Moscow resident who was taken into custody last fall. The collected materials comprise two volumes, and notably, the case includes exclusively positive references from the defendant's workplace.

Recently, the Moscow City Court held a hearing on the defense's appeal, which requested that the IT director be placed under house arrest, citing unjustified delays by the prosecution. However, the court upheld the legality of extending his detention until July 10. The defense confirmed the completion of the preliminary investigation but declined further comments on the case's nuances.

Analyst's Comment: This case is a warning signal for the entire crypto community. It demonstrates that even minimal amounts of USDT transferred to a wallet belonging to someone on the registry can be interpreted as terrorism financing. This underscores the critical importance of due diligence in any P2P transactions and the need to use blockchain analysis tools to verify counterparties. The market must realize: the anonymity of cryptocurrencies is a myth, and the price of carelessness can be measured in years of freedom.
