A 16-year-old teenager has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for preparing a terrorist attack, using cryptocurrency as a recruitment tool.
The Second Western District Military Court has handed down a harsh sentence to a 16-year-old resident of the city of Liski. The teenager was found guilty of preparing to blow up the car of a Russian serviceman and will spend the next seven years in a juvenile correctional facility. In addition to imprisonment, the convict was also fined. This case is a vivid illustration of how digital assets are becoming a key link in the chain of remote recruitment of minors.
The investigation established that in May 2025, the young man contacted representatives of Ukrainian special services via a messenger app. For a monetary reward, he agreed to participate in organizing an explosion. During May and June, he secretly surveilled the serviceman's car in Voronezh, regularly photographing the target and sending reports to his handlers.
Payment for data collection was made exclusively in cryptocurrency. The total amount of transfers was at least $370. The choice of virtual currency for cross-border payments is quite logical: such transfers bypass Russian banks, conceal the sender's data, and are significantly more difficult to block. This is standard practice for organizers seeking to maintain anonymity and avoid tracking.
Detention and Charges
The perpetrator did not manage to carry out his plan. The young man managed to retrieve explosives and a ready-made improvised device from a hiding place in Liski, but at that moment he was intercepted by operatives from the regional FSB directorate. The materials from the special services formed the basis of the criminal case. The court found the defendant guilty of preparing a terrorist act as part of an organized group and the illegal trafficking of explosive devices via the internet.
Financing such tasks through crypto wallets reflects a general alarming trend. Anonymous coins have become a common tool in remote recruitment, as the organizer and the perpetrator do not meet in real life. The search for the unknown handlers continues as part of a separate investigation into aiding terrorism.
