Snap Inc. has officially announced SPECS — a fully portable computer integrated into the form factor of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2,195, positioning it as a premium product for developers, professionals, and AR enthusiasts.

The key difference from its predecessors is complete autonomy. SPECS do not require a connection to a smartphone or an external computing module. The model weighs between 132 and 136 grams, comparable to regular sunglasses. The frame is made of lightweight and durable TR90 polymer.

SPECS Technical Specifications

  • Field of view — 51 degrees (one of the widest on the AR glasses market);
  • Two Snapdragon processors (one handles rendering, the other handles general computing);
  • Signal latency — only 7 milliseconds, which is critical for immersion;
  • Up to 4 hours of battery life on a single charge, up to 20 hours with the battery case.

The lenses feature an electrochromic coating that automatically adjusts the tint level within 10 seconds depending on lighting conditions. This allows the glasses to be used both indoors and outdoors.

The software foundation is Snap's proprietary OS, Snap OS. The interface supports gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation, productivity tools, and educational applications. Developers have received an updated Lens Studio for creating AR effects. AI assistants capable of analyzing the environment in real time are integrated into the system.

Notably, the approach to privacy deserves special mention. SPECS are equipped with an LED recording indicator that lights up when the camera is activated. Most computations occur on the device without sending data to the cloud. Users can manage sync history and delete recordings. Against the backdrop of recent scandals involving facial recognition in Meta's smart glasses, this move by Snap appears timely and responsible.

My analysis: Snap is betting on "human-centric" computing, where technology does not distract but enhances reality. SPECS is not just a gadget but a bid for a new paradigm of interacting with the digital world. However, the $2,195 price tag and limited launch (USA, UK, France) indicate that the product will not become mainstream until the next generation.
