Snap takes AR glasses to the next level: SPECS unveiled at $2195
Snap Inc. has officially announced SPECS — a standalone portable computer in the form factor of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2,195, with shipments to the US, UK, and France starting this fall.
The key feature of SPECS is full autonomy. Unlike many competitors, these glasses do not require a connection to a smartphone or external modules. The device weighs between 132 and 136 grams, and the body is made of durable TR90 polymer. The technical specifications are impressive: a 51-degree field of view, two Snapdragon processors, a signal latency of just 7 milliseconds, and a battery life of up to 4 hours on a single charge or up to 20 hours with the charging case.
The lenses are equipped with electrochromic coating, which automatically adjusts the tint level within 10 seconds based on ambient lighting — a solution that significantly enhances comfort in various conditions.
The software foundation of SPECS is the proprietary Snap OS. The interface supports gesture and voice control, and users have access to navigation services, productivity tools, and educational applications. For developers, the Lens Studio toolkit has been updated, enabling the creation of AR effects. AI assistants integrated into the system can analyze the surrounding environment in real time.
Snap has paid special attention to data protection. The glasses are equipped with an LED indicator that activates during video recording. Most data is processed locally without being sent to the cloud, and users can independently manage their sync history and delete recordings.
Cryptalist Analysis: Snap is betting on privacy and autonomy — a smart move in light of recent facial recognition scandals among competitors. SPECS looks like a mature product that could set new standards in the wearable AR device segment. However, the $2,195 price tag still excludes the mass consumer — the niche remains premium.
