Snap releases SPECS: standalone AR glasses with AI and a focus on privacy
Snap Inc. has officially unveiled the SPECS — a portable computer in the form factor of augmented reality glasses that does not require connection to a smartphone or external modules. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2195, with shipments to the US, UK, and France starting this fall.
Technical Specifications and Design
The SPECS weigh between 132 and 136 grams, with a body made of durable TR90 polymer. The field of view is 51 degrees, providing a wide area for AR content. The device is powered by two Snapdragon processors, ensuring a minimal signal latency of just 7 milliseconds. Battery life reaches 4 hours on a single charge, and up to 20 hours with the charging case.
The lenses are equipped with an electrochromic coating that adjusts tint levels within 10 seconds depending on lighting conditions. This makes the device comfortable to use both indoors and outdoors.
Operating System and Capabilities
The device runs on its own Snap OS. The interface supports gesture and voice control, offering users navigation, productivity tools, and educational applications. Developers have received an updated Lens Studio toolkit for creating AR effects, and AI assistants integrated into the system can analyze the surrounding environment in real time.
Privacy as a Priority
Snap has emphasized data protection. The glasses feature an LED indicator that lights up during video recording. Most data is processed directly on the device without being sent to the cloud, and users can independently manage sync history and delete recordings.
My comment: Snap SPECS is a confident step forward in the wearable AR device segment. Battery life and a focus on privacy set them apart from competitors, especially after the recent scandal involving Meta and facial recognition. However, the price of $2195 and limited geographic availability still raise questions about mass adoption. Nevertheless, for early adopters and developers, this is a powerful tool.
