Snap takes AR glasses to the next level: SPECS unveiled at $2195
Snap Inc. has officially unveiled SPECS — a standalone portable computer in the form of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2195, with first shipments to the US, UK, and France starting this fall.
Key technical specifications of SPECS:
- Field of view — 51 degrees
- Two Snapdragon processors
- Signal latency — just 7 milliseconds
- Weight — from 132 to 136 grams
- TR90 polymer frame
- Up to 4 hours of battery life (up to 20 hours with charging case)
The glasses operate completely autonomously — without needing to connect to a smartphone or external modules. This is a fundamental difference from many competitors. The lenses are equipped with electrochromic coating that automatically adjusts tint levels within 10 seconds depending on lighting conditions.
The device runs on its own operating system, Snap OS, which supports gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation apps, productivity tools, and educational content. Developers have received an updated Lens Studio toolkit for creating AR effects.
Of particular note is the built-in AI assistant, capable of analyzing the surrounding environment in real time. Snap has also paid serious attention to data protection: an LED indicator lights up during video recording, and most data is processed directly on the device without being sent to the cloud. Users can independently manage their sync history and delete recordings.
My analysis: Snap SPECS is a serious bid for leadership in the AR wearable segment. The $2195 price point places them in the premium segment, but autonomy and low latency of 7 ms could be decisive factors for professional users and developers. Unlike Meta, which has faced privacy issues with its smart glasses, Snap has bet on transparency and local data processing — this could become their competitive advantage in a market where user trust is becoming a key asset.
