Snap Inc. has officially unveiled SPECS — a portable computer in the form factor of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2,195.

Shipments to the US, UK, and France will begin this fall. A key feature of SPECS is its full autonomy. The device does not require connection to a smartphone or external modules, operating as a standalone computer.

The glasses weigh between 132 and 136 grams, with a body made of TR90 polymer. The technical specifications are impressive:

  • field of view — 51 degrees;
  • two Snapdragon processors;
  • signal latency — just 7 milliseconds;
  • up to 4 hours of battery life on a single charge (up to 20 hours with the case).

The lenses feature an electrochromic coating that adjusts tint levels within 10 seconds depending on lighting conditions. The device runs on its own Snap OS, supporting gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation, productivity tools, and educational applications.

Developers have received an updated Lens Studio toolkit for creating AR effects. AI assistants capable of analyzing the surrounding environment in real time are integrated into the system.

Special attention has been paid to data protection. The glasses are equipped with an LED indicator that lights up during video recording. Most data is processed directly on the device without being sent to the cloud. Users can independently manage their sync history and delete recordings.

My analysis: Snap is betting on privacy and autonomy, which sets SPECS apart from competitors like Meta, which recently faced criticism over facial recognition features. However, the $2,195 price tag and limited launch geography indicate that this is a niche product for developers and early adopters, rather than a mass-market device. The success of SPECS will depend on how quickly Snap can scale production and reduce costs.
