From resumes to Bitcoin theft: a new crypto fraud scheme in the job market for Russians
The topic of employment abroad has turned into one of the most lucrative traps for financial fraud that Russians face. Scammers operate with frightening caution, not demanding money immediately. Instead, they accompany the job seeker at every stage of a fictitious hiring process over several months.
In a recent incident that came under my analysis, the main tool of theft was a fake cryptocurrency platform. It was through this platform that the victim had more than 270,000 rubles stolen. The victim was an ordinary Moscow manager who had posted a resume on a popular job search website.
How the scheme with digital assets works
First, a person posing as an employee of a foreign company contacted the job seeker. They were offered a tempting warehouse position in Germany. Then a second coordinator, claiming to be a visa support specialist, joined the conversation.
The scammers methodically led the victim through a fictitious process: giving advice on gathering documents and describing in detail the procedure for obtaining a work visa. Ultimately, the job seeker was convinced that to be successfully hired, they needed to open an account in a European bank and confirm their financial solvency.
At this stage, cryptocurrency enters the scenario. The victim was strongly advised to register on a special platform and deposit money there. As soon as the balance was topped up with over 270,000 rubles, the coordinators announced a sudden account block. To recover the funds, they demanded another payment.
The transfer to the exchange is disguised as a legitimate financial action. The victim sincerely believes they are simply confirming their income or opening a personal account. To the average person, the platform looks like an independent technical service, not at all like the criminals' wallet. The account blocking trick allows for a second withdrawal of funds, as the person is already deeply involved in the process.
The real procedure for document processing
A real work visa is issued exclusively at the consulate or official visa center of a specific country. This always requires an official invitation from the employer and a strictly defined set of documents.
| Verification Parameter | Correct Option | Sign of Deception |
| Processing Method | Consulate or visa center | Communication only via messengers |
| Income Confirmation | Bank account statement | Transferring money to third-party platforms |
| Paid Services | Official consular fee | Requirement for unblocking or activation |
There is a simple marker of fraud. The requirement to register on a crypto exchange and transfer savings there has nothing to do with immigration law. Such conditions can never be part of a real hiring process.
Expert comment from Cryptalist: This scheme is a classic example of social engineering, adapted to modern realities. Scammers skillfully play on a person's desire to improve their life, using cryptocurrency as an opaque tool for the final withdrawal of funds. Any calls to part with money at the application approval stage signal fraud—whether it's opening accounts, verifying wallets, or paying to unblock a profile. The legality of a vacancy should only be verified through the employer's official contacts and diplomatic agencies. You should not rely on the honesty of random interlocutors in chats.
