Zhao Changpeng transferred $2 million to prisoner education: strategy or redemption?

Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, who himself spent four months behind bars, has decided to invest in those currently on the other side of the bars. This refers to the charitable organization Prison Professors, which focuses on education and resocialization of inmates in U.S. federal prisons.

According to my information, Zhao transferred a total of $2 million to this organization. The transactions were conducted semi-annually — four payments of $500,000 each. And all of this happened without any unnecessary press attention. The funding only became known now, when the Binance founder himself decided to reveal the details.

What did Zhao's money go towards?

Prison Professors, founded by former inmate Michael Santos, produces books, educational courses, and self-development programs for convicts. The received funds will be used to scale the project. The organization's leadership has already confirmed receipt of all tranches.

Key areas of expenditure include:

  • Creating and distributing free educational content;
  • Integrating materials from partners, including Binance Academy courses;
  • Developing a digital system to track student progress;
  • Collecting detailed statistics on learning outcomes in correctional facilities.

The organization plans to provide access to online lessons for every federal inmate. Given the scale of the U.S. penitentiary system, this is an ambitious task, but $2 million provides a serious head start.

Personal experience as motivation

The prison topic is not an abstraction for Changpeng Zhao. Recall that in spring 2024, he served a four-month sentence for violating U.S. anti-money laundering laws. The exchange itself paid a colossal fine of $4.3 billion. Later, in fall 2025, President Donald Trump pardoned the businessman, which sparked mixed reactions in the crypto community. Many experts linked this decision to the platform's investments in Trump's family stablecoin USD1.

My expert assessment: This move by Zhao is not just charity, but a well-thought-out strategic step. First, it restores his reputation after the high-profile scandal. Second, investing in inmate education is a long-term bet on reducing recidivism, which ultimately benefits society as a whole. For the crypto industry, which often suffers from a "Wild West" image, such social initiatives are a breath of fresh air and a way to prove that blockchain and its leaders can bring real value.
