Oman centralizes mining: all licensed miners are required to operate through a national pool
Oman has taken a decisive step towards centralizing cryptocurrency mining. The country has launched its own national mining pool, which all licensed digital asset miners within its territory are required to join. This is not a recommendation, but a direct requirement from the regulator.
The project was implemented by Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology in partnership with Frontier Technologies. Enegix Global acted as the key technology partner, providing the pool platform and liquidity infrastructure. Thus, the state effectively takes control of all hashrate flows within the country.
At the initial stage, the national pool plans to consolidate approximately 10 EH/s of computing power. This is a significant volume capable of influencing the global distribution of hashrate, especially in the Persian Gulf region.
Billion-dollar investments in infrastructure
Since 2022, Oman has been actively expanding its presence in the mining sector. Total investments in cryptocurrency mining and data center construction in the Salalah Free Zone have exceeded $700 million. In particular, a mining facility with a hydro-cooling system, valued at $370 million, has been launched.
This approach reflects Oman's long-term strategy: the country aims not just to attract miners, but to create a fully regulated, state-controlled ecosystem. Consolidating capacities into a single pool gives authorities full operational transparency and the ability to efficiently manage energy consumption.
Analytical commentary: Oman's decision is a logical continuation of the trend towards the sovereignization of mining. We see how Middle Eastern states with cheap energy resources are gradually becoming key players in the industry. However, forced consolidation into a national pool may deter large institutional miners who value decentralization and independence. In the long term, this approach could lead to the fragmentation of global hashrate along national borders.
