The Ethereum liquidity index on Binance has updated to a three-month high: what this means for the market

The Ethereum market is showing signs of recovering activity: the liquidity index on the largest crypto exchange, Binance, has reached around 1.15. This is the highest value in the last three months, indicating a return of market depth after a prolonged decline.

To recall, in February of this year, the index rose above 1.6, but then a gradual yet steady decline followed. By the end of April and the beginning of May, the indicator dropped below 0.8, signaling a serious outflow of liquidity and a decrease in trading activity. However, in recent weeks, the trend has reversed: the index is growing in sync with trading volumes, and the total liquidity turnover has exceeded 20 million ETH.

What is the liquidity index and why is it important

This tool assesses the market's ability to execute large buy and sell orders without significantly impacting the price. The higher the value, the deeper the market and the lower the spreads — meaning traders can operate with large volumes at minimal costs. The current level of 1.15 indicates that Binance is once again capable of absorbing significant trading volumes without causing sharp price jumps.

The rise in the index coincided with ETH trading near the $1700 mark. Although the price is not showing explosive movement, the improvement in liquidity creates a more stable environment for price action. During periods of low liquidity, even small orders can cause sharp fluctuations, increasing volatility and risks for participants.

Forecast and scenarios

If the liquidity index holds at current levels or continues to rise, this will be a positive signal for the market. Improved trading conditions typically attract both retail and institutional participants, enhancing overall market efficiency. Conversely, a decline in the index would indicate weakening activity and a possible narrowing of spreads, which could increase volatility.

My view: the return of liquidity on Binance is not just a technical indicator, but a marker of returning participant confidence. After a prolonged period of a "dry" market, we are seeing the first signs of revival. However, it is important to monitor whether this trend can solidify — a sustained rise in the index above 1.3–1.4 would be a more convincing confirmation of a reversal.
