Ethereum Foundation loses key executive: co-executive director leaves after sabbatical

Ethereum ETH Efir 2025

Xiao-Wei Wang, who served as co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, has officially left both the position and the foundation's board. Her departure followed a period of sabbatical, which, according to her own words, led to a reassessment of personal priorities and life goals. This statement was made in a personal address, where she emphasized that the decision is not related to any internal conflicts or issues in the foundation's management.

This event marks the second significant personnel loss for the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. In February of this year, Tomasz Stańczak, who held a similar role as co-executive director, also decided to leave the organization. In response to these changes, Bastian Aue, who previously held the position of technical director, was appointed as the interim co-executive director.

Such a series of departures raises questions about the stability of the foundation's management structure during a period when the Ethereum ecosystem is undergoing an active phase of technological upgrades and increasing competition from other blockchain platforms. The departure of two top managers responsible for strategic and operational management may signal the need to review the leadership model or find new approaches to distributing responsibilities.

From my perspective, these changes are not critical for the long-term development of Ethereum, as the foundation has a deep bench of talented specialists and a strong community. However, they highlight the importance of creating a sustainable system of succession and personnel rotation to avoid dependence on individual key figures. Investors and ecosystem participants should closely monitor how the new interim leader handles the challenges and whether permanent appointments will be announced in the coming quarters.
