Ethereum Foundation loses top manager: Xiao-Wei Wang leaves post as co-executive director

Ethereum ETH Efir 2025

The Ethereum Foundation continues to experience a period of governance turbulence. The organization's co-executive director, Xiao-Wei Wang, has officially announced her departure from both the foundation's board and her operational role. This decision was made after completing a sabbatical she took to reassess her priorities.

In her statement, Wang emphasized that a review of personal goals and life priorities was a key factor influencing her decision. She did not indicate any internal conflicts or dissatisfaction with the foundation's strategy, suggesting the departure is purely personal in nature.

A Wave of Personnel Changes

Wang's departure is the second significant personnel loss for the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. In February 2025, Tomasz Stańczak, who also held the position of co-executive director, left a similar role. The temporary solution was to appoint Bastian Aue to this position, but his status remains interim.

This series of resignations at the highest level raises questions about the stability of the foundation's governance at a critical moment when the Ethereum ecosystem faces growing competition from Layer-2 solutions and new blockchains. The loss of two key figures could slow down strategic decision-making, particularly in the areas of grant distribution and protocol development.

My analysis: While Wang's personal reasons for leaving appear convincing, the simultaneous turnover of two top managers within a short period is a concerning signal for the community. The Ethereum Foundation needs to quickly stabilize its management structure to prevent paralysis in decision-making, especially in light of upcoming network upgrades. Otherwise, we may see a further increase in the influence of third-party developers and commercial organizations on Ethereum's roadmap, which is not always beneficial for decentralization.
