Schab storms the prediction markets: binary options on the S&P 500 are already in development

рынки предсказаний prediction markets

Charles Schwab is preparing to debut in prediction markets — and this is not just an experiment, but a strategic move. In partnership with Cboe Global Markets, the broker is launching binary options with a "yes/no" mechanism for its clients, tied to the movement of the S&P 500 index. The launch is expected in the coming months, marking Schwab's first entry into this segment.

Binary options are a fixed-payout instrument where traders only need to predict whether an asset will reach a certain level by a specified date. In this case, the underlying asset is the S&P 500. Unlike traditional options, there are no complex Greeks or strike prices — only a clear outcome: "yes" or "no." This format is particularly appealing to retail investors who want to hedge risks or simply play on volatility without deep diving into derivatives.

For now, the lineup is limited to a single benchmark, but plans include expansion to other market indices and financial metrics. This makes sense: Schwab, as one of the largest U.S. brokers with millions of clients, can quickly scale the product if it proves popular. Cboe, in turn, gains access to a vast client base through its infrastructure.

Prediction markets are not new, but their integration into traditional brokerage platforms is a growing trend. Consider Polymarket or Kalshi, which have already attracted billions of dollars. Schwab, however, is taking a more conservative path, using regulated exchanges and familiar instruments. This reduces legal risks and boosts trust among conservative investors.

My analysis: This move by Schwab is not just a passing fad but a signal that prediction markets are becoming mainstream. Binary options on the S&P 500 could serve as a "gateway drug" for millions of retail traders who previously ignored derivatives. If the product proves successful, we will see a wave of imitators from other brokers — and then the prediction market segment will grow much faster than analysts forecast.
