Anthropic has completed training a new model — a possible successor to Mythos 5

A significant event is brewing in the AI market: analyst Andrew Curran reported that Anthropic has completed training on a new, more advanced model that could become the next generation of the Mythos line. While the company has not officially confirmed the existence of this system, its name, or its claimed capabilities, the leak has already sparked lively discussions within the professional community.

According to Curran, the new model outperforms Mythos 5 in terms of performance. However, the system's fate remains uncertain: it could be released as Mythos 5.1 or Mythos 6, or even kept for internal use. This statement came nine days after US export restrictions forced Anthropic to suspend work on the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models.

To recall, on June 12, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick sent an order to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, citing national security concerns. The restrictions affected all foreign nationals, including company employees born outside the US, leading to a global shutdown of both models.

Notably, the blockade did not halt development. Moreover, according to Curran, it could even accelerate progress by freeing up resources. As an example, he cites open-source competitors like Z.ai's GLM-5.2, which handles programming tasks just as well as significantly more expensive closed models.

For now, the fate of the new model remains undecided. Whether Anthropic releases it publicly, restricts access through the Glasswing project, or keeps it for internal use only—this will significantly alter the balance of power in the AI market. The company continues to seek restoration of access to both blocked models, but time is working against it.

Analyst's opinion: The situation surrounding Anthropic is a vivid example of how geopolitical restrictions can not only hinder but also paradoxically stimulate development. If the new model truly surpasses Mythos 5, we may witness a shift toward more closed but powerful internal solutions, changing the competitive dynamics in the AI market over the coming quarters.
