Bitcoin developers propose to abandon the Replace-by-Fee function: an analysis of the consequences

A debate has erupted in the Bitcoin developer community over the advisability of retaining the Replace-by-Fee (RBF) mechanism in wallets. This refers to a feature that allowed users to increase the fee for an already sent but unconfirmed transaction sitting in the mempool. After the network switched to full-RBF mode, the old BIP-125 protocol, according to many experts, has become redundant and even creates privacy risks.

Why has RBF become a problem?

The RBF mechanism, originally conceived as a tool for accelerating transactions in a congested network, now allows attackers to track which specific wallet the sender used. This creates a vulnerability: by analyzing RBF signals, it is possible to link multiple transactions to a single address or even identify specific software. Amid growing attention to the privacy of Bitcoin transactions, such a "side effect" becomes unacceptable.

Technical essence of the proposal

Developers propose completely removing BIP-125 support from wallets, relying solely on full-RBF, which is already implemented at the network level. This will simplify the code and reduce the load on the mempool, but most importantly, it will eliminate the ability to track the sender through specific behavioral patterns. However, not everyone agrees: opponents argue that removing RBF could complicate life for users accustomed to manually adjusting fees.

My view on the situation

As an analyst, I believe that abandoning BIP-125 is a logical step in Bitcoin's evolution. The network has long outgrown the need for "crutches" to manage fees, and the threat of wallet data leakage outweighs the convenience. In the long term, this decision will strengthen privacy and make Bitcoin more resistant to chain analysis. I recommend that users update their wallets in advance and familiarize themselves with the new mempool mechanisms — full-RBF has already proven its effectiveness in test scenarios.
