SpaceX received a "junk" ESG rating: CCC from MSCI and a comparison with Russia
Elon Musk's aerospace giant has found itself in an uncomfortable position: rating agency MSCI assigned SpaceX a CCC score on the ESG scale. This is the lowest possible rating ever given to public companies. The irony is that Russia received the same rating after the events of 2022.
The decision was announced literally a day before the company's historic IPO, during which SpaceX raised $75 billion by listing shares on Nasdaq. However, in the first days of trading, SPCX quotes fell 18% from their peak of $225, and the market capitalization shrank from $3 trillion to $2.37 trillion.
ESG Failure: What Lies Behind the CCC Rating?
MSCI evaluates the company across three key areas: environment, social factors, and corporate governance. SpaceX received extremely low scores in each. Specifically, in governance metrics — only 3.2 out of 10. And in the level of ESG controversies — 1 out of 10, which automatically assigns an "orange flag."
According to MSCI's methodology, companies with a CCC rating demonstrate "critically weak management measures" and, as a rule, have already been involved in serious scandals or are in a high-risk zone. For SpaceX, this is a signal that sustainability-focused investors may begin to avoid its securities.
Why Is This Important for the Crypto Market?
On the Hyperliquid platform, major players have already opened a net short position of $45 million against the growth of SpaceX's value. The crypto community is actively discussing that a low ESG rating could become an additional driver for bearish sentiment, especially amid post-listing instability.
My analysis: While the market is focused on the price dynamics of SPCX, the fundamental signal from MSCI could prove far more significant in the long term. For crypto investors accustomed to volatility, this is another example of how the "green" agenda influences traditional markets. In the coming weeks, increased attention to the ESG indicators of other tech giants should be expected.
