Franklin Templeton creates Franklin Crypto: a giant step into institutional digital assets
The asset management firm with $1.78 trillion in assets under management officially completed the acquisition of 250 Digital on June 22, 2026. The result of this deal was the creation of a separate division — Franklin Crypto, which will be responsible for managing digital assets and implementing active crypto strategies for institutional clients.
Deal Closure and Integration: From CoinFund to In-House Management
Previously, the liquid cryptocurrency strategies of 250 Digital were managed through CoinFund. Now, the entire 250 Digital team and these strategies are transitioning under the direct control of Franklin Templeton. The company will invest its own capital in these strategies, completely changing the risk and return management model.
The deal, which was announced on April 1, 2026, is now fully closed. This is a logical continuation of Franklin Templeton's long-term course, which began experimenting with blockchain technologies back in 2018. Notably, the company was one of the first issuers in the U.S. to launch a fund operating on public blockchains for purchase and sale operations and recording ownership rights to shares.
Key Figures of the New Division
Christopher Perkins has been appointed head of Franklin Crypto, and Seth Ginns has taken the position of Chief Investment Officer. They will work in partnership with Franklin Templeton Digital Assets veteran Tony Pecora. The entire division reports to Sandy Kaul, head of innovation.
CEO Jenny Johnson noted that the experience of the 250 Digital team enhances the company's capabilities in the digital assets space and positions Franklin Templeton among the few global asset managers with their own institutional crypto strategy team.
Institutional Scale and Active Strategies
As of May 31, 2026, Franklin Templeton's assets under management totaled $1.78 trillion. Franklin Crypto leverages the expertise of its own digital team, focusing on fundamental research, active portfolio management, and an institutional approach to risk management.
The new division targets institutional clients interested in active cryptocurrency strategies, operating within regulatory frameworks and a broad geographic presence. Franklin Crypto combines professional execution in the crypto market with Franklin Templeton's proven infrastructure and client base.
The division plans to launch active cryptocurrency strategies for institutional investors worldwide. The integration strengthens the company's position — Franklin Templeton will now be able to offer sophisticated digital solutions to institutions that are increasingly allocating capital to this asset class through established managers.
Expert opinion: The creation of Franklin Crypto is not just a rebranding, but a strategic move that transforms a traditional giant into an active player in the digital asset market. Amid growing demand from institutional investors, having an in-house team and infrastructure becomes a key competitive advantage. I expect other major asset management firms to follow this example.
