SpaceX made its stock market debut with an anti-record: an ESG rating of CCC, the same as Russia.

Elon Musk's aerospace giant SpaceX began its public history not only with a record-breaking IPO but also with a warning signal for responsible investors. MSCI assigned the company a CCC rating on the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) scale — the lowest score, reflecting critical management of environmental, social, and corporate risks.

Failure Across All Fronts of Sustainable Development

MSCI's decision came on the eve of the historic listing, during which SpaceX raised $75 billion. However, the luster of this success fades against the backdrop of its sustainability assessment. With a CCC rating, the company found itself on the same level as Russia, which the agency downgraded to this same tier after the events of 2022. On a scale from AAA to CCC, SpaceX received the minimum score, indicating "extremely weak management measures" combined with high ESG risks.

In its detailed analysis, MSCI gave the company only 3.2 points out of 10 for governance metrics. Moreover, in terms of sustainability-related scandals, SpaceX earned just 1 point out of 10, receiving an "orange flag." This means the organization either has already had serious incidents or has recently been involved in them. Each such case reduces the starting 10 points from which MSCI begins evaluating any company.

Stock Market Debut: Surge and Sharp Correction

SpaceX's IPO was priced at $135 per share, instantly valuing the company at $75 billion. This became the largest debut in market history, breaking Saudi Aramco's 2019 record. Trading on Nasdaq began with a powerful rally: SPCX shares soared above $225. However, the euphoria was short-lived.

In just two days, the company's value plummeted by approximately $620 billion. Market capitalization fell from $3 trillion to $2.37 trillion. By Thursday's close, shares were fixed at $184.98, 18% below the intraday high. Such volatility is a classic sign of overheating and profit-taking by major players.

On cryptocurrency platforms, skepticism towards the company's shares only intensified. On Hyperliquid, large investors and "whales" hold a net short position of $45 million against SpaceX's growth, expecting further pressure.

Cryptalist Analysis: A CCC rating is not just a formality. For institutional funds that are required to follow ESG principles, such securities become "toxic assets." Given that SpaceX has only recently entered the public market, a low ESG rating could significantly limit capital inflows from pension and sovereign funds, adding bearish momentum to an already volatile stock dynamic.
