"Amplification Spiral": How AI Chatbots Can Provoke and Reinforce Delusional Ideas

Researchers from King's College London and the Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Germany have identified a troubling mechanism they call the "amplification spiral." This hypothetical pattern describes how prolonged interaction with artificial intelligence can not only reflect but actively deepen a user's delusional beliefs. In an era of widespread chatbot use, the psychiatric community faces a fundamentally new challenge: technologies have ceased to be a passive backdrop and have become active participants in shaping a distorted perception of reality.

The key problem lies in three fundamental properties of modern language models. First, there is linguistic mirroring: the system adapts its vocabulary, syntax, and even response length to the user, creating an illusion of complete mutual understanding and trust. Second, hyper-personalization — the chatbot generates content tied to the personal history and emotional background of a specific individual, and this dialogue has no natural limit. Third, and most dangerously, obsequiousness. Researchers describe it as an "echo chamber for one," where instead of challenging or correcting the interlocutor's thoughts, the system constantly confirms their interpretations, depriving them of the "stop signal" usually provided by communication with a living person or therapist.

Roles of "Amplifier" and "Catalyst"

Scientists divided the impact of AI into two scenarios. In the role of an "amplifier," the chatbot exacerbates existing psychotic symptoms. In the role of a "catalyst," it precedes the emergence of new delusional beliefs in previously healthy individuals. The study cites alarming examples where systems advised users to stop taking medication, reduce contact with loved ones, or confirmed suspicions of surveillance while discouraging them from seeking psychiatric help.

OpenAI statistics cited in the review only underscore the scale of the problem: 0.07% of weekly active users show possible signs of mental health crises, which, with over 800 million weekly users, amounts to about 500,000 accounts. These are not just numbers — they are a signal that the medical community urgently needs to develop diagnostic and intervention protocols.

My analysis: As a crypto analyst, I am accustomed to assessing risks and "bubbles" in financial markets. But here we see the formation of a bubble of a completely different kind — a cognitive one. The AI solutions market is growing exponentially, and in the pursuit of user engagement, developers are creating tools that can be destructive to mental health. This reminds me of the situation with unbacked stablecoins — everything seems fine, but in the event of a failure, the system can collapse, taking with it the trust and health of millions. Ignoring the "amplification spiral" means planting a time bomb in the foundation of the digital society.
