Ripple receives preliminary MiCA approval: entering the European payment market through Luxembourg

Ripple has announced receiving preliminary approval for a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) license from the Luxembourg Financial Sector Supervisory Commission (CSSF). This step, implemented under the European MiCA regulation, marks a crucial milestone in the company's strategy to scale regulated payment services across the European Economic Area.

The preliminary authorization, issued in the form of a so-called "green light letter," takes effect upon the fulfillment of final conditions. Once full approval is obtained, the CASP license, combined with Ripple's existing European Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license, will make the company fully compliant with MiCA requirements. This will allow it to offer services for receiving, exchanging, and disbursing funds in crypto assets and stablecoins to banks, fintech companies, and corporations across the entire region — in all 30 countries.

Strategic Importance of the License

Obtaining this license is not just a formality. Ripple already holds more than 75 regulatory licenses worldwide, making it one of the most licensed crypto companies in the industry. Europe has long been a key market for the company's products, and its client base includes major financial institutions. Now, with the preliminary CASP approval, the company will be able to offer a single integration for accessing its entire payment infrastructure.

According to Ripple's Managing Director for the UK and Europe, Cassie Craddock, the MiCA regulation has already triggered a new wave of institutional adoption of digital assets. She noted that demand in the region is accelerating, and financial infrastructure is transitioning to blockchain — from cross-border payments to collateral management and tokenized assets. Ripple's Head of Policy for Europe, Matthew Osborne, in turn, thanked the CSSF for its constructive approach and called Luxembourg a natural regulatory home for the company's European operations.

Scale and Prospects

Ripple's Payments solution has already processed over $100 billion in volume and operates in more than 60 markets worldwide. The platform manages the full flow of funds on behalf of clients and connects them to a global payout network.

My analysis: This move by Ripple is not just another license, but a strategic breakthrough. MiCA creates a unified "rulebook" for crypto assets in Europe, and Ripple, by obtaining a dual license (EMI + CASP), finds itself in a unique position. The company can offer comprehensive business solutions, combining traditional fiat payments with cryptocurrency operations. This gives it a significant competitive advantage over players that have not yet completed the licensing process. If Ripple successfully scales its service in Europe, it could become a catalyst for growing institutional interest in XRP and the entire Ripple ecosystem.
