Ripple receives preliminary approval for a CASP license in Luxembourg: a new step towards European expansion

Ripple, one of the leading players in blockchain payments, has taken an important step toward expanding its presence in the European Economic Area (EEA). I have received confirmation that Ripple has obtained preliminary approval for a CASP license (Crypto Asset Service Provider) in Luxembourg. This document, issued in the form of a so-called "Green Light Letter," is not yet a final license — the company must fulfill a number of additional regulatory conditions.

What does this mean for the market?

After full approval, Ripple Payments will be able to offer regulated services for processing crypto assets and stablecoins to banks, fintech companies, and corporations across 30 EEA countries. It is important to note that the CASP license will complement Ripple's existing European EMI license (Electronic Money Institution), significantly strengthening its regulatory framework in the region.

To date, Ripple Payments has processed over $100 billion in transactions across more than 60 markets worldwide. These figures speak to the scale of the infrastructure the company is building for institutional clients.

My analysis: Obtaining preliminary approval in Luxembourg is a strategically sound move. Luxembourg has long established itself as one of the most progressive and crypto-friendly regulatory centers in Europe. If Ripple successfully completes the process, it will not only strengthen its position against competitors like SWIFT but also set a precedent for other companies seeking legal expansion into the EEA. Amid tightening regulations worldwide, holding a dual license (EMI + CASP) becomes a key competitive advantage.
