Analysts reject parallels between STRC Strategy and the UST Terra collapse: fundamentally different assets
Debate is reigniting in the market around Strategy's new financial instrument — STRC preferred shares. Some market participants are drawing alarming parallels between STRC and the infamous algorithmic stablecoin UST Terra, which collapsed in 2022. However, from a professional standpoint, this comparison is deeply flawed and misleading.
A fundamentally different asset nature
The key difference lies in the very essence of the instrument. STRC is not a stablecoin nor an attempt to create a decentralized currency. It is a classic preferred share issued by the company Strategy. It offers a fixed dividend of 11.5% per annum, which is standard practice for corporate securities. Its par value is indeed fixed at around $100, but the market price can fluctuate. For example, at one point quotes dropped to $82.53, which is normal volatility for an equity instrument, not a sign of algorithmic instability.
Mechanism of operation and risks
Unlike UST, which relied on a complex and fragile arbitrage mechanism with the LUNA token to maintain its peg, STRC has no algorithmic support. Its price is determined by market supply and demand, as well as the fundamental indicators of the issuing company. As long as the market price of STRC remains below its $100 par value, the company Strategy does not use this instrument as a channel to raise capital for purchasing bitcoin. This means the current situation is not a liquidity crisis, but a temporary market revaluation.
Expert commentary: Comparing STRC to UST is a classic example of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt), based on a superficial similarity (the presence of a "peg"). In reality, we are dealing with two completely different asset classes: one is a high-risk algorithmic derivative, the other is a relatively conservative corporate instrument with fixed income. The market should soberly assess the risks of each instrument without succumbing to emotional analogies from the past.
