Amazon MGM has shelved the film project about the OpenAI crisis: what lies behind the decision

Sam Altman

Amazon MGM Studios has officially abandoned production of the film "Artificial" directed by Luca Guadagnino, which was dedicated to the dramatic events at OpenAI in November 2023. The film was supposed to recreate in detail the story of Sam Altman's firing on November 17 and his return as CEO just five days later—one of the most resonant corporate crises in the history of the technology industry.

According to my information, the decision was made just over three months after Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including an investment of $50 billion. From a corporate logic perspective, this looks absolutely rational: releasing a film that could highlight internal conflicts and instability within a partner company means creating reputational risks for a multi-billion dollar alliance.

Amazon MGM stated that the film "would be better suited for release by another studio" and is now actively looking for a "new home" for it. However, in practice, given the scale of the deal between Amazon and OpenAI, finding such a buyer will be difficult—few will want to get involved with a project that could be perceived as inconvenient for a key market player.

My Analysis

This case is a classic example of how corporate interests outweigh creative freedom. A film about the crisis at OpenAI could have become an important document of the era, but in conditions where Amazon has invested $50 billion in a partnership with the same company, an independent look at the events of November 2023 becomes commercially unfeasible. The cryptocurrency and AI market is increasingly intertwined with traditional business, and such decisions will only become more frequent.
