Crypto PACs have spent over $8 million on U.S. primaries: an analysis of the industry's influence

USA США

Political committees linked to the crypto industry have disclosed significant spending on media support for candidates ahead of the June 23 primaries in New York, Maryland, and Utah. The total amount exceeded $8 million, signaling the growing influence of digital assets on the American political arena.

The bulk of these funds—over $5.5 million—was directed by the Protect Progress committee (affiliated with Fairshake) to support Adrian Boafo in Maryland's 5th district. Another $1.4 million was allocated to Ritchie Torres's campaign in New York's 15th district. These injections demonstrate the crypto industry's strategic focus on key races where the outcome could impact regulation.

Criticism and Opposition

Boafo's opponents immediately called on him to reject external support, labeling these expenditures as spending by "crypto billionaires" and other special interests. This reaction underscores the growing tension between traditional political elites and new financial players. For the crypto industry, such investments are not merely charity but an investment in loyal lawmakers capable of easing regulatory pressure.

The scale of spending on the primaries is just the tip of the iceberg. Total crypto-PAC spending is expected to exceed $100 million by the 2024 elections, making them among the largest political donors in the U.S. This calls into question traditional campaign financing mechanisms and sparks debates about transparency.

My analysis: The crypto industry is clearly playing the long game, seeking to shape a legislative environment favorable to blockchain and DeFi. However, such an aggressive strategy risks provoking a backlash—tightening campaign finance rules and intensifying anti-crypto rhetoric from opponents.
