Amazon MGM has abandoned the biopic about Altman: a conflict of interest or a creative resolution?

Amazon MGM Studios has made an unexpected decision: the film project "Artificial" by director Luca Guadagnino, dedicated to the dramatic events at OpenAI and the temporary dismissal of Sam Altman, will no longer be released under their banner. The film, which was set to recreate the chaos of November 17, 2023 — when the board of directors unexpectedly removed Altman, and five days later he triumphantly returned as CEO — is now seeking a new distributor.
Amazon's official stance is that the film "is better suited for another studio." However, the market perceives this decision differently. Just three months ago, Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including investments totaling $50 billion. In this context, releasing a film, even a fictional one, about an internal crisis at a partner company would have been, at the very least, awkward. The conflict of interest here is obvious: showcasing a drama at the helm of OpenAI while simultaneously investing billions in its development is a questionable PR move.
In my view, this is a classic case where corporate policy outweighs creative ambitions. Amazon likely preferred to save face with its new technological ally rather than risk its reputation for a potential hit. The question now is whether a studio will be found willing to take on this project without regard for current alliances. In the world of crypto and AI, such decisions remind us that even in cinema, business interests often prove stronger than art.
