Crypto-PACs have directed over $8 million toward U.S. primary elections: strategy or pressure?
Ahead of the June 23 primaries in key states—New York, Maryland, and Utah—political committees closely tied to the cryptocurrency industry have disclosed massive expenditures exceeding $8 million. These funds were directed toward media support for candidates, highlighting the growing influence of digital assets on the U.S. political landscape.
The Protect Progress committee, affiliated with the broader Fairshake structure, played a central role in this campaign. It accounted for the bulk of the costs: over $5.5 million was allocated to support Adrian Boafo in Maryland's 5th congressional district. Another $1.4 million was directed toward promoting Ritchie Torres's campaign in New York's 15th district.
Such infusions have not gone unnoticed. Boafo's competitors openly called on him to reject external funding, labeling these expenditures as spending by "crypto billionaires" and other special interests that, in their view, distort the will of voters. This raises a pressing question about the transparency and ethics of such investments in political processes.
