Amazon MGM is dropping the Sam Altman film: the studio is seeking a "new home" for the OpenAI drama.

Amazon MGM Studios has made an unexpected decision to abandon production of the film Artificial directed by Luca Guadagnino, which focused on the dramatic events of November 2023 at OpenAI. The film was set to tell the story of the governance crisis that led to the temporary dismissal of Sam Altman on November 17, 2023 — and his triumphant return as CEO just five days later.

As it has become known, Amazon MGM's leadership concluded that the project "would be better suited for another studio." The creators are now actively seeking a "new home" for the film among independent or major Hollywood studios. The decision was made less than four months after Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including an investment of $50 billion.

It is worth noting that the abandonment of the film looks particularly striking given the close financial ties between Amazon and OpenAI. At a time when the cloud giant is investing tens of billions of dollars into the partnership, releasing a drama centered on internal strife and power struggles at OpenAI could create an awkward narrative for both sides.

As an independent analyst, I see in this decision not just creative differences, but a clear signal to the market: corporate alliances are beginning to influence cultural content. When a $50 billion investment hangs in the balance, even the most talented director may find that their vision of a "true story" becomes inconvenient for the sponsor.
