Amazon MGM is stepping away from a film about the drama at OpenAI: conflict of interest or creative decision?

A major studio project dedicated to one of the most resonant events in the history of the technology sector — the November crisis at OpenAI and the temporary removal of Sam Altman — has lost its main distributor. Amazon MGM Studios has officially withdrawn from releasing the film "Artificial," directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Why Amazon Left the Project
The decision was made just over three months after Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including an investment of $50 billion. Internal sources at the studio explain that, in their opinion, the film would be better suited for release by another studio. The team is now looking for a "new home" for the project.
The events underlying the script unfolded on November 17, 2023. At that time, OpenAI's board of directors unexpectedly fired Sam Altman from his position as CEO, causing shock in the industry and leading to massive pressure from investors and employees. Just five days later, after a series of negotiations and internal conflicts, Altman was reinstated in his position.
My Analysis of the Situation
In my view, Amazon MGM's refusal is not so much a creative decision as a corporate one. When you have a $50 billion partnership with the very company whose crisis you are planning to dramatize, any film, even the most artistically refined, risks turning into a tool of PR warfare or, conversely, an undesirable reputational burden. Amazon clearly preferred to maintain face with a key technology partner rather than risk a multi-billion-dollar relationship for the sake of one film project.
Nevertheless, the story of Altman's firing and return is so dramatic and full of insider details that it will inevitably find its producer. The question is only who will dare to tell it without regard for corporate alliances.
