Amazon MGM is stepping away from the biopic about Sam Altman: a conflict of interest or a strategic move?

Amazon MGM Studios has made an unexpected decision: the film "Artificial" by director Luca Guadagnino, dedicated to the dramatic events at OpenAI in November 2023, will not be released under their label. The film, which was set to recreate in detail the five-day crisis—from Sam Altman's firing on November 17 to his triumphant return as CEO—is now seeking a new distributor.

Amazon MGM's official stance is that the project "is better suited for another studio." But as an experienced analyst, I see a deeper subtext here. The decision came just over three months after Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including an investment of $50 billion. Making a film about the internal conflicts of a company you've poured tens of billions of dollars into is, at the very least, shortsighted from a corporate image perspective.

For Hollywood and the crypto community, this is a signal: Amazon is prioritizing business interests over creative ambitions. On the other hand, the departure of such a project from a major studio could open doors for independent studios that are not bound by commitments to Altman and OpenAI. The question is who will dare to take on this story, knowing it could be perceived as biased.

My comment: This is a classic example of how corporate politics intrudes into art. Amazon, in essence, admits that controlling the narrative is more important than truthful coverage of events. For the crypto industry, where transparency is a key principle, such a move looks like a warning sign: even the biggest players prefer a "convenient" story over a real one.
