Crypto-PACs have spent over $8 million on U.S. primaries: an analysis of the industry's influence on politics

USA США

Political committees affiliated with the crypto industry have disclosed expenditures totaling over $8 million aimed at media support for candidates ahead of the primaries held on June 23 in New York, Maryland, and Utah. This is a significant signal of the growing influence of the crypto community on the American political arena.

The bulk of the funding went to the Protect Progress committee, linked to the well-known super-PAC Fairshake. According to my data, Protect Progress allocated over $5.5 million to support Adrian Boafo in Maryland's 5th congressional district and more than $1.4 million for Ritchie Torres's campaign in New York's 15th district. These figures demonstrate that the crypto industry is ready to invest in loyal lawmakers capable of defending the sector's interests at the federal level.

Interestingly, such large infusions have sparked a sharp reaction from opponents. Boafo's rivals called on him to reject external support, labeling these expenditures as "spending by crypto billionaires" and other special interests. This underscores the growing tension between traditional political circles and the rapidly expanding influence of the crypto industry.

My analysis: These $8 million are just the tip of the iceberg. Crypto PACs, such as Fairshake, are strategically investing in candidates who can advance favorable regulation, especially in key states. I expect that by the 2024 presidential election, the volume of such investments will double, and the crypto industry will become one of the major political players in the United States.
