Amazon MGM is stepping away from the Sam Altman biopic: the studio is looking for a new distributor.

Amazon MGM Studios has made the unexpected decision to abandon the release of the film "Artificial," directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film was set to meticulously recreate the dramatic events of November 2023, when OpenAI's board of directors suddenly fired Sam Altman, only for him to be reinstated as CEO five days later after intense pressure from investors and employees.

According to my information, the studio deemed the project "a better fit for release by another studio." Amazon MGM is now actively seeking a "new home" for the film, which in practice means a complete withdrawal from its own production. The decision came less than three months after Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including investments totaling $50 billion.

Conflict of Interest or Creative Incompatibility?

From a market perspective, this move looks more than pragmatic. When your corporate wallet is tied by multi-billion dollar commitments to a company whose internal drama becomes the subject of a Hollywood biopic, releasing such a film means voluntarily putting yourself in the line of fire. Amazon, obviously, decided not to risk its reputation or create unnecessary tension in its relationship with Sam Altman and his team.

For the industry, this is yet another confirmation of how closely the interests of big tech and entertainment content are intertwined. I believe "Artificial" will still find its distributor, but in the independent sector, where they are less afraid of sharp edges. Meanwhile, Altman's story itself continues to be one of the most captivating narratives in the modern corporate world — and it seems Hollywood is only beginning to explore it.
