Altcoin Season: Glassnode Indicator Soars, but the Market Warns of a Trap

The Altcoin Cycle Signal indicator from Glassnode has once again entered the zone traditionally associated with "altcoin season." However, unlike classic scenarios, the current signal is driven not by confident growth in alternative coins, but by a sharp weakening of Bitcoin (BTC).

Typically, such a signal indicates that altcoins are gaining momentum while Bitcoin stabilizes, retaining liquidity without absorbing all market inflows. Now, the situation is fundamentally different.

Growth on the Weakness of the Flagship

The indicator's value has exceeded the 50 mark, reaching 86, which formally points to altcoin dominance. Analysts emphasize that sellers in the altcoin market have nearly exhausted themselves after two years of intense pressure. However, the main catalyst is the decline of Bitcoin, which has lost 18% of its value over the past month. This occurred against the backdrop of hawkish rhetoric from the U.S. Federal Reserve and concerns over further tightening of monetary policy.

Bank of America's forecasts of three rate hikes this year are adding additional pressure on risk assets, including cryptocurrencies. Rising borrowing costs traditionally reduce investor appetite for speculative instruments.

However, not everyone shares such a bleak scenario. At Grayscale, for example, they adhere to a baseline forecast suggesting that the Fed will refrain from further hikes. If concerns over monetary policy ease, they believe Bitcoin could not only recover its positions but also outperform stock indices, which currently appear more resilient.

A New Era or a False Start?

Glassnode notes that the current surge in the "altcoin season" index is largely due to BTC's weakness. To confirm the signal, a recovery in Bitcoin is necessary: then altcoins would grow alongside a strong flagship, rather than at its expense.

Moreover, many experts doubt the return of a classic altseason. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes the era of indiscriminate growth across all altcoins is over. We face an unconventional season where success will be selective. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju echoes this: for projects to survive, a new narrative is no longer enough—they need a working business model and real revenue.

My opinion: The market is undoubtedly in a transition phase. The Glassnode signal is more of a warning about a trend reversal than a call to blindly buy altcoins. Investors should be extremely selective in choosing assets, favoring projects with fundamental value rather than mere speculative stories. The classic "altcoin season," where "everything is green," is likely a thing of the past.
