Crypto PACs have spent over $8 million on US primaries: the battle for political influence is intensifying

Political committees closely tied to the cryptocurrency industry have disclosed over $8 million in spending on media support for candidates ahead of key primaries on June 23 in New York, Maryland, and Utah. This is a significant signal that the digital asset and blockchain sector is seeking to solidify its influence at the legislative level.
The bulk of the funds went to the Protect Progress committee, part of the Fairshake ecosystem. It spent over $5.5 million to support Adrian Boafo in Maryland's 5th district and more than $1.4 million on Ritchie Torres's campaign in New York's 15th district. These infusions into media advertising and campaigning underscore how seriously the industry is committed to advancing its allies.
However, this activity has sparked a sharp reaction. Boafo's opponents publicly called on him to reject external support, labeling these expenditures as "crypto-billionaire money" and funds from other special interests. This is a classic tactic by political opponents trying to discredit a candidate associated with new technologies. In my view, this only confirms that the crypto industry is becoming a full-fledged player on the U.S. political stage.
Expert commentary: These expenditures are not just charity but a strategic move. Crypto-PACs are investing in loyal politicians who can influence industry regulation. If this trend continues, we will see even more aggressive lobbying ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
