The Glassnode indicator signals an "altcoin season": growth amid Bitcoin's weakness.
The cryptocurrency market has once again become the focus of analysts. My Altcoin Cycle Signal indicator, designed to assess altcoin dominance, has re-entered a zone traditionally associated with "altseason." However, the current situation is far from the classic scenario.
The key driver of this signal is not organic growth in alternative coins, but a sharp drop in Bitcoin. Over the past month, BTC has lost about 18% of its value, which automatically raised the indicator's reading to 86 points. Typically, such a level (above 50) indicates altcoin outperformance, but now it reflects more of a weakening of the flagship rather than a widespread altcoin boom.
Macroeconomic backdrop weighs on BTC
The main reason for Bitcoin's correction is the tightening of monetary policy by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Bank of America analysts predict three interest rate hikes this year. In such conditions, risky assets, including cryptocurrencies, traditionally face pressure: expensive loans reduce investors' appetite for speculative instruments.
However, not all experts share this pessimistic forecast. Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, adheres to a baseline scenario in which the Fed refrains from further rate hikes. If these expectations materialize, Bitcoin and other digital assets could not only recover their positions but also demonstrate confident growth, especially against the backdrop of sustained positive momentum in global stock markets.
A new perspective on "altseason"
It is important to understand: the current high readings of my indicator do not guarantee a universal rally. Leading analysts, including Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, believe that the era of classic "altseasons," when all coins rose simultaneously, has ended. It is being replaced by a more selective market, where only projects with real revenue and a working business model will succeed.
CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju also emphasizes that for altcoins, "a new narrative is no longer enough." Only those offering concrete value will survive.
My analysis: The Glassnode signal is a warning, not a call for mindless buying. A true "altseason" will only begin when Bitcoin stabilizes and resumes its uptrend, pulling the strongest altcoins along with it. For now, we are witnessing a temporary redistribution of capital amid BTC's weakness, which requires investors to exercise increased caution and focus on fundamentally strong projects.
