The Glassnode indicator signals an "altcoin season": analysis of a contradictory signal
The Altcoin Cycle Signal indicator from the analytical platform Glassnode has once again entered the zone traditionally denoting an "altcoin season." However, as experts note, this signal has an ambiguous nature: its appearance is driven not by organic growth of alternative cryptocurrencies, but by a sharp decline in the price of Bitcoin (BTC).
In the classic understanding, an "altcoin season" occurs when altcoins show confident growth while Bitcoin holds its positions, attracting liquidity without overheating the market. Currently, the situation is different. The Altcoin Cycle Signal value has surged to 86 points, formally indicating altcoin dominance. However, the key driver of this movement is not the strength of altcoins, but the weakness of the flagship cryptocurrency.
BTC Correction as a Catalyst
Over the past month, Bitcoin has lost about 18% of its value. The correction began amid the tightening rhetoric of the U.S. Federal Reserve and market fears regarding the maintenance or even increase of interest rates. For example, analysts at Bank of America predict three rate hikes this year. Such a policy traditionally pressures risky assets: the rising cost of borrowing reduces investor appetite for speculative instruments, including cryptocurrencies.
However, not all experts share this pessimistic scenario. Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, believes that the Fed will refrain from further increases. In this case, easing concerns about monetary policy could support Bitcoin and other digital assets, especially if global financial markets maintain positive momentum.
The mere fact of a high Glassnode indicator value does not guarantee a widespread rally. The company's analysts emphasize that the current signal is largely explained by the decline in BTC's price. To confirm a sustainable "altcoin season," a recovery of Bitcoin is necessary: in a healthy scenario, altcoins should grow alongside a strong BTC, not solely against the backdrop of its weakness.
A New Era for Altcoins or the End of Classic Rallies?
A number of leading experts, including Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, believe that the era of classic altcoin rallies, where all assets rose "on the same wave," has ended. In their view, we are facing an unconventional "altcoin season" where success will be selective. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju adds that for altcoins, "a new story is no longer enough." Only those projects with real revenue and a working business model will survive.
Cryptalist Commentary: The current Glassnode signal is more "bearish" for Bitcoin than "bullish" for altcoins. Investors should exercise caution: a real altcoin season will only begin when capital starts flowing from BTC into altcoins amid stability or growth of the first cryptocurrency, not due to market panic. Fundamental analysis of projects is now more important than ever.
