Amazon MGM is stepping away from the Altman film: conflict of interest or a shift in strategy?

Amazon MGM Studios has made an unexpected decision — to abandon the release of the film "Artificial" directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film was set to tell the dramatic story of the events at OpenAI that unfolded in November 2023, when the board of directors fired Sam Altman, and five days later he triumphantly returned as CEO.

Amazon's official statement says the project "would be better suited for another studio." The studio is now actively seeking a new home for the film. However, the timing raises questions: the decision to end the collaboration came just three months after Amazon and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership with $50 billion in investments.

When Business Meets Art

The situation looks like a classic conflict of interest. Amazon, having invested billions in developing AI infrastructure alongside OpenAI, is unlikely to be interested in reminding the market of its partner's internal squabbles. Guadagnino's film would likely have touched not only on Altman's firing but also on broader governance issues at OpenAI — a topic the company would probably prefer not to bring to the big screen.

On the other hand, this could also be a purely commercial calculation: Amazon MGM may have decided that a drama about a tech startup would not draw the audience needed to justify the costs. But I tend to think that here we are seeing the first warning sign of how large corporations entering alliances with AI giants are beginning to control the narrative.

Personally, I believe that Amazon's refusal is not just a production decision but a signal to the market: in an era of billion-dollar deals between tech giants and studios, independent content that criticizes or even simply details the internal processes of partners becomes inconvenient. The film will find a new home, but the precedent itself is telling.
