The Glassnode indicator signals an "altcoin season": a rally or a false breakout?

The digital asset market has once again come into focus after a key indicator from Glassnode — the Altcoin Cycle Signal — re-entered the zone traditionally associated with "altcoin season." However, unlike classic scenarios, the current signal has an ambiguous nature. Analysts emphasize that its activation is driven not so much by organic growth of alternative coins, but by a sharp weakening of Bitcoin's (BTC) position.

Under normal conditions, such a signal indicates that capital is flowing from Bitcoin into altcoins, while the leading cryptocurrency maintains relative stability and continues to attract buyers. Now, however, the picture is different: the index has exceeded the 86 mark, formally signaling the start of "altcoin season," but its driver has been an 18% drop in BTC over the past month. According to experts, sellers have nearly exhausted their potential after two years of aggressive pressure, yet Bitcoin continues to show a downward trend.

Bitcoin's Weakness as a Catalyst

The main reason for the current market correction has been the tightening of macroeconomic conditions. The hawkish stance of the U.S. Federal Reserve, backed by expectations of further interest rate hikes, is putting pressure on all risk assets. Bank of America's forecasts of three rate increases this year only amplify these concerns. In such an environment, investor interest in speculative instruments, including cryptocurrencies, naturally declines.

Nevertheless, not all experts share a pessimistic view. For example, Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, adheres to a baseline scenario in which the Fed refrains from further hikes. If this position is confirmed, easing concerns over monetary policy could become a powerful catalyst for Bitcoin's recovery and, consequently, for the entire digital asset market. In that case, "altcoin season" could receive genuine confirmation.

Is the Classic Scenario a Thing of the Past?

Glassnode notes that a sustained "altcoin season" signal is only possible if Bitcoin recovers. Only then can altcoins grow against the backdrop of a strong BTC, rather than its weakness. However, many industry veterans, including Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, believe that the era of total altcoin rallies is over. In his view, we are facing an unconventional "altcoin season," where growth will be selective and concentrated around projects with real value.

CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju also urges caution. He emphasizes that for altcoins to succeed, loud news or "stories" are no longer enough. Only projects that can demonstrate a working product, stable revenue, and a sustainable business model will survive.

Commentary from Cryptalist analyst: The current signal is more a reflection of market weakness than the start of a powerful rally. Investors should be selective and not succumb to euphoria. The true "altcoin season" will only begin when Bitcoin finds its bottom and stabilizes, creating a solid foundation for capital to flow into the most promising projects.
