Amazon MGM abandons Altman biopic: conflict of interest or creative disagreement?

Amazon MGM Studios has made an unexpected decision to abandon production of the film "Artificial" directed by Luca Guadagnino, which focuses on the dramatic events at OpenAI in November 2023. As a reminder, on November 17, 2023, OpenAI's board of directors fired Sam Altman as CEO, but just five days later, following intense pressure from employees and investors, he was reinstated.

According to my information, the studio concluded that this project would be better executed by another film company and is now actively seeking a "new home" for it. This decision appears particularly notable given that just three months ago, Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, including multi-billion dollar investments totaling $50 billion.

From a professional standpoint, an obvious conflict of interest is evident here. Amazon, as a major technology player and now a direct investor in OpenAI, is hardly interested in releasing a film that could negatively portray the company's leadership and its key figure. A biopic, especially in the interpretation of a director like Guadagnino, would almost certainly touch on controversial aspects of Altman's management, his ambitions, and internal conflicts within OpenAI.

My conclusions

This move is not just a rejection of a single film project. It is a clear signal of how closely the interests of big capital and media are intertwined. Amazon, having invested $50 billion, cannot afford to even indirectly sponsor reputational risks for its new partner. I believe that "Artificial" will still be released, but in independent distribution, which could make it even sharper and more honest.
