Cboe brings binary options on S&P 500 mini-futures to the prediction market: a new standard for traders
Exchange giant Cboe Global Markets has officially launched the first instrument in its new Cboe Predicts lineup. This involves binary options on the mini S&P 500 index (XSP) — a product that, in my firm belief, will become a catalyst for the evolution of prediction markets. This is not just another derivative; it is a bridge between traditional exchange mechanisms and a new generation of traders accustomed to simple, straightforward "yes/no" bets.
At launch, trading is available through broker Interactive Brokers, but in the coming months, the instrument will become available to clients of Charles Schwab, followed by other retail brokers. The tickers XSPBW and XSPBX are already active on the trading platform. The mechanics are extremely simple: the trader votes "yes" if they expect the index to close at or above a specified level, and "no" if they predict a close below. A correct prediction yields a fixed payout of $100. Clearing operations are handled by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), adding institutional reliability.
Why This Matters for the Market
The emergence of XSP options is a direct result of the explosive demand for zero-days-to-expiry (0DTE) options that Cboe has observed in recent years. Cboe's head of retail, JJ Kinahan, directly links the launch to this trend. Rob Hocking, who oversees derivatives, emphasizes that the goal is to set new standards of transparency and investor protection for the entire prediction market industry.
Notably, Cboe is entering a field where Polymarket and Kalshi are already active, and Meta is rumored to be developing its own application. However, Cboe has a key advantage — deep liquidity and the well-established infrastructure of the SPX options ecosystem. In the future, the exchange plans to add XSP vertical spreads through its own Quoted Spread Book platform.
My Comment: The launch of Cboe Predicts is not just an expansion of the product line, but a strategic step toward legitimizing prediction markets. Unlike many crypto-oriented platforms, Cboe offers a regulated, cleared instrument with clear mechanics. For retail investors, this is an opportunity to participate in forecasting with a minimal entry threshold but maximum reliability. I expect that the success of XSP options will push Cboe to launch similar instruments on other assets, including cryptocurrencies, which could radically change the landscape of prediction markets.
