Starting July 1, Meta is launching a mechanism for additional fees on advertising accounts targeting users in a number of countries. This decision is directly linked to the introduction of digital services taxes and other local fiscal obligations that fall on the company.

The size of the surcharge will be determined not by the location of the advertiser itself, but by the geography of the target audience. According to my analysis, the rates vary: 5% for campaigns in Austria and Turkey, 3% for France, Italy, and Spain, and 2% for the UK. It is important to note that Meta reserves the right to revise both the list of jurisdictions and the amounts of fees, which indicates the dynamic nature of regulatory pressure.

This step is a direct transfer of the tax burden onto advertisers, which will inevitably affect the cost of traffic acquisition in these regions. In an environment where digital taxes are becoming an increasingly common tool of government regulation, such measures by Meta could set a precedent for other ecosystem giants.

Expert commentary: From my point of view, this strategy by Meta is logical but risky. It creates a precedent where platforms shift fiscal costs directly onto businesses, which could lead to a decrease in advertising activity in these jurisdictions.
