Germany bets on quantum sensors: SPRIND opens funding for innovative projects

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) is launching two new support programs aimed at developing quantum sensors. These are devices that use fundamental quantum effects to achieve unprecedented measurement accuracy. Such sensors could radically change navigation systems, climate monitoring, and industrial automation.

Applications are accepted until September 6. The structure of the programs shows a clear division of strategic priorities: the first line focuses on applied scenarios and commercialization of technologies, while the second supports fundamental research into new measurement methods and the development of quantum systems. This approach covers both short-term market opportunities and long-term scientific breakthroughs.

Program participants will receive not only direct funding but also access to a mentoring system and a broad network of industry contacts. This is critically important, given that quantum sensors are one of the most promising yet capital-intensive areas of deep tech. Germany is clearly striving to take a leading position in this niche, where atomic-level measurement accuracy could become the new standard for entire industries.

My analysis: The SPRIND initiative is not just grant support but a well-thought-out mechanism for creating an ecosystem. Quantum sensors have a much shorter commercialization horizon than quantum computers and could deliver tangible economic returns within the next 3-5 years. For the crypto industry, this is also a signal: improved measurement accuracy and quantum metrology could impact the development of hardware wallets and secure random number generation systems.
