Germany bets on quantum sensors: SPRIND launches two innovative programs

The German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) has officially announced the launch of two new support programs aimed at developing projects in the field of quantum sensors. These are devices that use fundamental quantum effects to achieve a fundamentally new level of measurement accuracy. Such sensors are already finding applications in critically important areas, from high-precision navigation and climate monitoring to industrial diagnostics and medical imaging.
Program Details and Deadlines
Applications are open until September 6. The first program focuses on applied scenarios — that is, specific market-ready products and solutions. The second program is oriented toward fundamental research: developing new measurement methods and creating promising quantum systems that could form the basis for next-generation technologies.
Selected teams will receive not only direct funding but also access to mentorship from leading experts and a broad network of industry contacts. This is especially important for startups that often face challenges in commercializing deep technologies.
Analytical Commentary
The SPRIND initiative is a clear signal that Berlin views quantum sensors as a strategic priority capable of ensuring technological leadership in the global race for quantum supremacy. Unlike quantum computers, which are still far from mass adoption, quantum sensors are already demonstrating commercial viability. In my view, this segment will become the first "bridge" between quantum physics and the real economy, and Germany is making the right bet by supporting it at the state level.
